The Legalist

Aug 9, 2026    Dr. Jeremy McMorris

In Luke 5:33–6:11, Jesus confronts the danger of legalism—the elevation of man-made rules and traditions to the level of God’s commands. Through disputes over fasting and the Sabbath, the Pharisees measure Jesus and His disciples by their own standards, value rules above people, and ultimately miss the One their religion was meant to point them toward. Jesus reveals Himself as the Bridegroom, the Lord of the Sabbath, and the merciful Lord who does good. This passage challenges us to examine where we may be adding to Scripture or judging others by our preferences and traditions. Legalism adds to what God says; true Christianity bows to, trusts, and obeys Christ and His Word alone.
